Neil Atkinson hosts Rob Gutmann, Dan Austin and Glenn Price to talk about Jurgen Klopp’s talk around the project, Peter Moore’s talk around the money and all the talk around the transfers.
There is also a long chat about the likely shape of Liverpool’s midfield next season in the week of Jordan Henderson’s five year anniversary of signing for Liverpool. There are now a new set of question marks around Henderson to do with his fitness.
It’s a great show, the summer looked forward to. What are we here for…
Direct: The Anfield Wrap – Jurgen’s Project?
Liverpool’s formula is quite clear. The owners don’t take money and we don’t make a profit.
It’s been like that since day 1. What that means in effect is we spend what we can afford.
This is why I was banging on we’d spend £130m gross this season. People replied said it wouldn’t be allowed by UEFA. We can’t know the exact amount but we can work out the figures to within 25m for absolute definite.
Moores comments were probably precautionary. We’ll spend this summer but next season we could be down to £60m – £80m depending on new wages to come over the summer and how we progress in Europe. We have that amount till 2019. I took it to mean we won’t necessarily buy say, De Gea for £60m (even if we could and used as an example because we’re not after one) we’ll look for a great keeper for £20m. It’s common sense. Marquee signing’s are not the be all. Pogba is ok but there’s far better players available for £35m. You just gotta know where to look.
Appreciate I have a few hours on you listening to this but Van Dijk is our main target. He’s the one that say’s LFC are back. We mean business. We’ve got a great project going on. I’m gonna make a bold prediction. Money aside, players would choose us over City at the minute. Van Dijk is the statement that makes other players confident to follow their belief that Anfield is a more exciting destination. Things have just changed.
It’s funny but never been one for ‘I told you so’ but I’m gonna repeat some more things I’ve been banging on about for months now. Remember when Suarez wanted to leave us for Arsenal, lol. As if that would happen now. No way on this earth. Another thing I’ve been saying (I must be really cool) is we’ve moved up a step.
We were in the market for the best that Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Dortmund, PSG etc didn’t want. We had no chance with players Barca, Bayern and Real wanted obviously. We’re now in tier 2. We’re beating City and Chelsea to players. If we could possibly win the league next season then we’ll become the most desirable team in the PL to play for. Believe me. Money is great but who wants to play to a bunch of empty seats or a bunch of Tory plastic flag waving dicks? They’re wank clubs. Fact.
Disclaimer: I was doing some work listening to this and may have misheard. I said hello to Rob as I was leaving the Boro game. I’m wondering now if he’s just got back from Nam and been on the acid with that tan and coat but did he say ‘Lfc don’t have a USP? The fans are the USP, Klopp is the USP. Players want to play for him. Players want to play in front of the Kop despite what we say about it. Klopp is selling this project. I’ve bought it hook, line and sinker. We just need success but I can see it coming. We’ve turned another corner today. We’re on the march. We were on the march prior to NYE. We were towards the end. We had a blip because we weren’t ready. We perhaps evolved to quick for our resources. This summer we become ready. We need Keita. I make no secret that I don’t know any European player but the You Tube has left me a desperate man. I want him so badly. Imagine it. We’d be the fastest attack on the planet with him behind Mane and Salah. He looks the business and made for Klopp.
Today’s the day the pendulum has swung. Utd, City, Chelsea and Arsenal are all good but they’re all boring as fuck. Us and Spurs is where the vibe is.
