People who think Coutinho can play *now* like Modric plays *now* (or played last season) must not have watched either player carefully enough.
The only way I would even consider playing Coutinho in the ‘2’ of a 1-2 CM setup would be if Lucas were the 1 and Henderson were his partner in the ‘2’.
No, I wouldn’t try it with Can as the ‘1’ or with Stewart.
Coutinho is notorious for not “defending our offensive actions/game” well enough, and for giving up on his defensive units if his first attempt at dispossessing an opponent fails.
Expecting Coutinho to be a satisfactory #8 in a 1-2 CM setup is like expecting a very talented, and quite limber 280-lbs power-lifter to be an accomplished ballet dancer.
defensive duties*
Completely agree with you GrkStav. I like Coutinio as a player but he does do this little half hearted tackle come skip when players go past him. They then have momentum to go past the next man or make the past. Yet, I often hear that he is good defensively on podcasts. I also think he has outstanding moments but seldom has outstanding games.

Nice to hear Coutinho being discussed…not doing nearly enough for the team. A great point made above that he has great moments but not great games.
Sturridge is suffering for a starting place as Klopp wants more from him….the fear is Coutinho could go the same way. Our two ‘best’ players being dropped as they can’t do the basics of what Klopp wants….?
