Hi all,
I’ve watched Luciano Vietto quite a bit this season on Sky, playing for Villarreal.
He does miss quite a few chances but his movement is excellent and is pretty calm on a one-on-one.
Under coach Marcelino and in a club tradition very influenced by Manuel Pellegrini, they play quick shortish passing in a quite a well spaced, tightly organised 4-4-2 with an intense pressing game and on a small home pitch. However, they are not averse to playing balls into the channels for quick forwards and wide players like Vietto and he has combined especially well this season with Denis Cheryshev, the rapid left winger on loan from Real Madrid. I’d take him too! I’d have them both over Danny Ings and Benteke together.
While I agree with John about us sometimes just signing someone because we can and because they have a release clause, I think he would be someone we should get anyway. I assumed he would go to Atletico Madrid because he played under Simeone briefly in Argentina. He actually scored the winner against them at Atleti in December, their first home league defeat for about a year.
Thanks.
Yous make a very good point about us just going out to buy who’s available at a good price rather than actually targeting specific players that suit our specific needs as a squad. How do you measure character, fighting spirit or drive from a stat sheet?? It’s sounds very baseball centric which is a sport that loves it’s stats. How can any manager build a squad when he simply has a load of players dumped at his feet and told “do something with them”! It’s a ridiculous strategy and one that’s doomed to fail.
