Ben Woodburn Has Impressed Everyone In Preseason

Ben Woodburn has been turning a lot of heads during Liverpool preseason. It seems like a lifetime has passed since he became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer at the at of 17 years, 45 days on the 29th of November in 2016. Although he’s shown bright sparks, he was largely a player that had left the radar of most Liverpool fans having been loaned out for consecutive seasons to Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool.

Having joined Liverpool at the age of seven, he has shown every sign of someone desperate to play for the reds, now at the age of 21 he has reached a crucial point in his development. Early loan spells have done him a lot of good, he has developed his game playing against more physical, stronger opponents and grown into his frame as a young man. Woodburn isn’t the sort of player that towers over opponents, so the development of his technical game has been crucial for his success as a footballer at the top level. His movement and tactical nature has been precise. His passing has been deliberate, tidy and his instinctive touches, including first time balls have been at times jaw dropping. His overall presence on the pitch has proved that he understands the importance of his role to his teammates.

“He played in the pre-season I think four, five, six, seven positions…

Played right-back, did really well; played midfield, did really well; played the wing, did really well; played number nine, did really well. So that’s good.”Pep Lijnders, Liverpool Assistant Manager on Ben Woodburn

Just a year younger than Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn looks as if he’s trying to throw his name in the hat as everyone wonders about who will be the next Liverpool wonder kid to establish themselves in the side. Having grown up with Curtis Jones, Owen Beck and been thrown in with Harvey Elliott – Woodburn looks like he’s ready to meet the challenge.
