Direct – Radio City Talk: The Story Of The Blues
Okay so I’ve been watching BVB for many years, through good times, bad times and then good times again with Klopp.
As much as Klopp did in resurrecting the club and getting them back to near the top, it was time for a change there. Part of his issue was the purchasing and handling of expensive signings; he underperformed in this area.
Mikki was Dortmunds record signing from Shaktar, and he struggled under Klopp. We kept hearing how great he was in practice but he was shit on game days. I mean, he was TERRIBLE! It was not until Klopp left that he flourished. Same with Auba, who was played out of position by Klopp. Tuchel put him up top and off the wing and look at him now, considered amoung Europe’s elite.
There are a few other examples, though not as clear cut perhaps. But it cannot be overlooked that Klopp did the best with these diamonds in the rough kind of players, and he made stars out of several of them.
So during the podcast where it was said that Klopp has worked with and developed expensive players, that’s not true at all. Worked with, yes. He also nearly ruined them.
If Liverpool spend big in the summer, which they really should do being the size club they are and want to be, then I will worry that Klopp will not handle these new players well. Every LFC supporter should take a moment to dig into Klopps transfer history at BVB and see how the expensive players performed under his stewardship. Doing so should set off some alarm bells. Perhaps, and hopefully, he has learned and grown since those times. If he has not, then disappointment lies ahead.
I’m hoping we do spend big this summer on 3 or 4 prime signings, top class players ready to go into the first team to make the difference. In theory, signing young players with potential is commendable but I’m fed up waiting for everything to click; I feel we’re always waiting for LFC to come good with young promising players. If your not signing or competing to sign the best you’ll never be considered as a serious top tier European side by the players you want to recruit.
Anyway why can’t we do both? Sign a couple of world class players as well as potential. With European competition ‘hopefully’ secure for next season we’ll need a much bigger squad to compete on all fronts.
Nothing suggests we will spend big in summer. History suggests we won’t.
This club does everything on the cheap.
“I think it’s a lot of ManĂ©’s” – great line and one I totally agree with.
