Nice podcast lads.
In the middle of it now. I was thinking, despite the positives of moving Luis on (£££, his age, his biting, his supposed racism) I worry that we may NOT be able to replace those 30+ goals. IN fact even replacing them with 15+ goals will be an ask. Only players like Michu/Bony/Remi have managed something like this in their first seasons. I also fear for the replacement of his assists, not to mention the general mayhem he causes when he is on the pitch. Overall, we as a club are doing good business etc. Which I am all for. It just feels like we may fall back as low as 5-7 this season if things don’t go our way. It wouldn’t take away from last seasons brilliance, but good business doesn’t necessarily mean trophies…which is what the clus is all about. What do you folk think? Am I too worried – or will everything be okay…..
I agree with you donncha. He has such a massive effect on the pitch because he’s kind of like a wide number 10 aswell as being a lethal forward. That’s pretty rare though Sanchez was as close a fit as you’ll get.
But he’s an outlier to our sustenance. Our strategy is to sell players like this at this age and get the money in to reinvest. The depressing side of that is we’ll have to get used to losing the best players because we’re not going to be in the market for the high wage high fee players that the best want to play with.
We’re banking on BR’s system being effective enough that we can plug in players and stay dangerous and get results from it. Note we didn’t really push the boat out to get Sanchez. We should have done. we should have gone with big wages to get Sanchez.
The fee was reasonable and he too can play the wide AM but still be a lethal striker leading the line if needs be. But it’s not our strategy and that could cost us. Depends who we do get and how effective BR is at putting it together.
I’m petrified to put it mildly. It would be so depressing if we crash and burn this year. Spurs players reckoned the only difference between us and them was Luis Suarez. Let’s hope that isn’t borne out.
The positive side is we may be a little more resilient playing 433, although it’s entirely possible Gerrard gets less and less effective defensively but that never seems to bother BR.
Nervous stuff.
Well, wow. A whole podcast and for once I don’t think I agreed with any of it, but thanks for doing it anyhow!
Sanchez is a huge miss and the fans are right to be peeved. He’s such a good fit. A dangerous wide forward and an excellent finisher, a real hardworking pain on the pitch. exactly who we should have got. Who else is a good option for dangerous finisher/superb wide man.
We should have offered £200k / wk wages and a signing on fee if necessary to get him but it goes against the FSG strategy. That would be paying for a fully valued player and we’re missing out on a valuable talent and not appreciating what Suarez brought us and assuming we’ll be ok anyhow. It will also make it difficult to buy other players who see you buying pretty much youngsters only.
Currently, our response is to buy a 20 year old maybe talent in Markovic for e25m. You say we’re not doing a Spurs, but is there any difference between that and Lamela for e30m? Not a lot I’d say. One injury and Lallana / Sterling become our solution with Lambert up top if Studge is injured – as he often is.
Shaquiri has given way to Markovic who is more expensive. What if he doesn’t sign? I’m sure he will because no way is he at that kind of valuation yet. But he’s only 20. Very pricey and nowhere near the finished product. Can he really help give us the goals we’re missing not to mention the free kicks and chaos up front? At 20?
And then the obsession with centre backs ? Buying more even with Wisdom and iLori and Kelly? I don’t get that. Clearly to get rid of Agger I’d say. perhaps its’ about wages or age. I think rodgers feels Agger isn’t aggressive enough, yet him and Skrtel get us the clean shits.
Sakho and Skrtel don’t. It’s as simple as that. There’s something about Sakho’s movement that is strange. He does go deep very quickly rather than holding a line and he’s very quick to move up to attack the ball sometimes getting out of position. There’s something not right about it and I’m not convinced Lovren is the solution to it, and that’s not to mention that it means sending the youngsters back out on loan. Rodgers thinks that’s going to make the defence better when the numbers say playing Agger and Skrtel together is what helps!
And where is the full back strategy? One failed approach for moreno and that’s it? Johnson isn’t signing a new contract, we’re not giving him 2 years so why aren’t we buying a RB aswell as a LB? I guess we’re waiting to see if Enrique is back on song for the LB position before we do anything else there but surely we should go for an Aurier for RB and sell Johnson.
He might get less than £10m but it all helps to get the replacement. It makes no sense to wait until next season and let him go for free. He’s just not that good. runs up the wing and then does what? very little. How is Rodgers so impressed with him that he wants him to stay ? And why would he accept a one year extension when he could get a 4 yr contract elsewhere, possibly 5? It’s basic stuff really.
So, the new season is a very scary thought. LVG at utd is going to be good for them. He seems to know how not to get beat and then go on and win a game. He’ll create a new Utd that is difficult to play. Pochettino has something to prove at spurs and Arsenal seem to be looking at serious talent and if they don’t have the injury issue of last year to Ramsey and Ox/Walcott then they will be far better than this year and they only finished 5 pts behind us. After a collapse too.
I think we’re back to aiming for 4th place. It’s going to be so tough. Do we have the players to finish ? We have the 3 games in 8 days on loop. Sturridge will have to be rested as will others.
We should also really prioritise the league over the CL. It’s a huge financial gain for CL in the 15/16 season with the CL money doubling. This is the summer to get the transfers that make sure of the next CL campaign and potentially put Utd out for many years. If we get this season wrong then it could easily be us put out for a few years – and possibly lose Rodgers his job.
All from the transfer strategy. There’s a time to spend big, this was it.
Good show gents, but felt obliged to write in…
Not sure TAW should be endorsing or marketing gambling … I understand the need to attract Funds to make the show bigger but surely not gambling…Would Shankly have approved..!!
The doom mongers do my head in! It’s still so early in the window so why are we so worried about a “lack” of activity (we’ve actually been pretty active compared to other teams). I’m not too concerned by the impact of Suarez’s departure. Sure I’ll miss his genius but at times our formation seemed unbalanced trying to accommodate both he and Sturridge in the same 11. Like the guys said, I think this move will allow Rodgers to build a TEAM that is properly suited to his philosophy.
