Just wanted to see if there was interest on a discussion of another transfer tactic we could always employ: the loan move.
Personally, I’m never crazy about getting players in on loan deals (I am definitely on board with loaning players out). I understand they can be beneficial for the club in perhaps getting a quality player that might not be so readily accessible to obtain on a full sale, but personally, they always feel a bit mercenary to me. We always dream that the player will immediately do wonderful things and fall in love with the club and then beg for a permanent transfer. The reality is, in my opinion, that that happens rarely.
Our last loan move of a player coming to us was Nuri Sahin last summer and that was a failure. It was definitely not a colossal failure as some of our more recent transfer dealings have been but still a failure overall in my estimation. He scored some goals when he played, but due to BR pretty much writing him off by November for reasons unknown and Nuri getting unlucky with some injuries along the way he just did not pan out. It was seen as such a coup that we were able to trump Arsenal to sign him, but in the end, we were the ones ruing what should have been with a player we had such high hopes for.
So, some questions I propose (feel free to answer all, or whichever ones you like):
Do you like the loan move tactic or not?
What are some examples of successful loan moves (of a player coming to us) that we have pulled off in recent seasons? I’m scratching my head to think of any right now, but I’m sure there are a couple examples.
Are there any players out there that you would like to see come in on loan? Specifically, are there players that we might not be able to buy outright that you could see us getting in on a loan?
Are there any young players you would you like to see go out on a loan and to where? Sterling and Suso seem to be the heavy favorites for a loan as of late, but what about Wisdom, or Ibe? Maybe even Joao Carlos Teixeira if the academy deems him ready enough?
Are there any more established players you would like to go out on loan? Maybe for reasons because they haven’t developed the way we would have liked them to, or because they are on high wage and we cannot find a buyer to outright sell them.
I thought it was fairly obvious why BR wrote Sahin off – he was a lazy player who whinged too much about being played “out of position”. Don’t doubt he’s got talent, but it’s not the first time the lad has been put out in the cold for being a bit of a prima donna.
