SO rare we come away from Anfield feeling like we’ve lost.
A feeling I definitely felt tonight and would not like to feel again where possible.
Alisson: 6
Didn’t have anything to do considering they showed very little interest in playing football after the goal. Not sure he could do anything about it either.
Gomez: 6
Really don’t like him at right back and tonight’s performance did very little to change my mind – which may say more about me than him.
Lovren: 8
Another proper defensive display from the Big Dog tonight and a goal absolutely nobody in Anfield saw coming to top it off.
Van Dijk: 7
Can’t figure out whether we keep overrating the fella who plays next to Virg and underrating the man himself, or whether he’s just performing slightly worse than his partner. Just performed slightly worse than his partner tonight, though.
Robertson: 7
Gets an extra point for making all of their lads fume at the end for sending one of them over the hoardings.
Fabinho: n/a

Milner: 6
Feel like he struggles when teams play dead compact, and it definitely doesn’t help when teams play dead compact with players as good as Napoli’s. Sets up the goal, though.
Henderson: 6
Similar to the above but was more involved in an attacking sense. Their 4-4-2 didn’t help him in terms of making overlapping runs, nor the fact that Gomez doesn’t actually stay that wide at all.
Mane: 5
A threat first half but thought he was well off it second.
Salah: 5
Biggest contribution was somehow managing to keep the ball while Koulibaly put him in a Full Nelson, but he somehow didn’t win a freekick.
Firmino: 5
Thought he did some good things defensively, but that’s a bit of an annoying sentence when we needed more going on in front of their goal.
SUBS
Gini: 6
Did lots of Gini things and also nearly Van Basten’d one into their top corner, except it didn’t go in.
Chamberlain: 6
Did loads of good runs and feel like he could have made something happen if they weren’t so annoyingly well organised.
Trent: n/a
Ineffective as a sub and would prefer us to scrap this Gomez at full-back chat altogether for both their sake.

Agree with all them ratings Josh. You’ve pretty much nailed it. I must admit , despite domestic dominance, I do worry when Milner and Hendo line up against well organised (Napoli yet again) and competent ( yes, Napoli) European opponents , well managed and drilled by Ancelotti (Again !)
The nimbleness of their midfield + Salzburg’s to come , should mean us proactively combatting that. We haven’t done that yet. That said , a draw takes us through but the December schedule is massively hard and I’m desperately hoping out league campaign won’t get de-railed by it

Think we can get away with a mildly rotated side at Bournemouth and then go full strength (if all available) against Salzburg.
Harsh on Bobby, in my opinion. If the front three, he was the only one that looked like he was going to make something happen. I thought Salah had as poor a game as I’ve seen him have.
I think Mo should get extra marks for managing to keep his head, LITERALLY when Koulibaly was attempting to rip it from his neck. That wasn’t a foul it was a full on assault. How that is not a pen is anyone’s guess. Thought the officials were a joke, a disgrace again.
As good as he was last night, … (yup, here it comes), Lovren “humphs” their man into Fabinho. As unintended as it was … it was a little bit indicative of the difference between himself and Matip/Gomez/Van Dijk. His lack of pace requires that he be better at reading the game/play. Now Fabinho is waiting on the results of a scan.
But apart from that, and their goal – lack of pace, poor reading of the situation – he played well.
Bless him, he is trying.
