Jordan Henderson Anfield Wrap Exclusive: Liverpool Couldn't Lose In 2014 Crunch Clash With Manchester City Thanks To The Fans

JORDAN Henderson revealed that the atmosphere created by Liverpool supporters before the 3-2 win at home to Manchester City in 2014 made the players feel as though they couldn’t lose.

In a 30-minute interview exclusive to The Anfield Wrap’s TAW Player subscription service the captain spoke about the influence supporters can have on the team’s performance.

Anfield has traditionally been considered one of the best stadiums for atmosphere in the English game and Henderson believes it is up there with the world’s best places to play at on its day.

He said: “You definitely notice a difference when it’s at its best, it’s electric really. If you ask anyone who’s played there, even if it isn’t for Liverpool, on a lot of occasions Anfield is one of the best stadiums in the world to play at.

“The fans are incredible, the noise that they can create it is like an extra man really. It gives you that confidence and that boost.”

Anfield’s atmosphere is perhaps most renowned for its European nights under the lights, one of the most recent of which being the 4-3 comeback win over Borussia Dortmund.

And Henderson added the buildup to the City game in 2014 as The Reds chased the title into that mix, insisting that the fans helped inspire that vital win.

“The biggest moment I can feel is obviously the Dortmund game that was the most recent one, it was something special.

“I can also remember when we were going for the title, when we finished second, we were playing City at home. Just before the game it was something I’d never experienced before. It just felt as though we couldn’t lose.”

For all the positives of the Anfield atmosphere when it’s at its best, there has been criticism in recent times of its inconsistency to produce when there is less on the line.

And while supporters may draw on the downsides of the modern game as a reason for this, Henderson believes it is as much about what the players do on the pitch to spur on the fans in the stands as it is the other way around.

“It is down to us as players to make sure that we perform the best we can so the crowd are right behind us, we’re on the front foot and we play like the manager wants us to play — a high intensity game.

“If we do that we can generate the fans electricity to flow through the whole stadium and hopefully next season we can do that on many occasions.”
