UNDER-23s captain Harry Wilson insists he is working hard to force his way into Jürgen Klopp’s plans, using the manager’s willingness to promote from within as motivation.

The 19-year-old was made captain by Michael Beale this summer, shortly after signing a new deal at the club, and has been one of the beneficiaries of the young Reds’ good form in recent weeks.

Wilson has scored three goals this season, including one against Leicester at Prenton Park as Klopp watched on from the stands, and hopes he can continue to catch the manager’s eye.

He told BBC Wales Sport: “It’s great that he’s willing to give the youngsters a chance if you’re playing well and doing well.

“Everything we do we try and mirror the first team. When you’re in there it’s up to you to do well then so if I keep doing well for the under-23s, hopefully my chance will come.

“Last season didn’t go as well as I wanted and I missed a large part of the season with injuries.

“It was nice to be offered a new contract and now that I’m fit I can show the club the qualities that I’ve got and work my way up to the first team.”

Wilson spent a lot of last season on the sidelines, but would have been pleased to see that his potential has been recognised by the coaching staff and he hopes he can continue to be a leader for the under-23s side.

“It’s [the captaincy] a massive honour for me and added responsibility but one I’m happy to have,” Wilson added.

“I think I’m a leader in a different way. I’m not going to do it with my mouth on the pitch.

“Maybe if the team needs a bit of inspiration during the game, I can provide that and push them forward.”
