Football - Football League Cup - Quarter-Final - Southampton FC v Liverpool FCMISSED the first few minutes because I was in a band rehearsal that over-ran (Amsterdam, Saturday night, Arts Club, bring your friends). Hearing Liverpool had gone down after 40 seconds was hardly the news I wanted. Watching the next 15 minutes didn’t exactly cheer me up, either.

But then! Joe Allen got a grip of it, Emre Can showed the other side of the temperamental genius, and the Liverpool forwards kept kicking it in the goal. No let up. Relentless. Death by football.

I’ll try my best not to give everyone 10.

Adam Bogdan 8

Nothing he can do for their goal. Then he did lots of standing round while The Reds were mustard. But catches it well, and looks confident. A fine number two.

Connor Randall 8

I tweeted my concerns for Randall after the start he had. I worry about these lads as young footballers and men, and thought it might be a night that set him back. But his team-mates took control, and after that he was able to grow into it. Some fine work going forward after that.

Alberto Moreno 9

Dodgy for the first goal. Not unlike the opener at Chelsea, he’s not alive to the threat. But you take the pros with the cons with that type of defender and there were loads and loads of pros. Makes, if not scores, the third and was flying forward with purpose right until he was taken off.

Martin Skrtel 8

Pelle still hasn’t scored against Liverpool. Skrtel deserves credit for that, as he plays on him, and Pelle has scored against most.

Dejan Lovren 8

It opened up a few times his side, but he was quick enough to close the door. Can’t be easy for him going there, so will get a lot from the win and performance

Lucas Leiva 8

The platform that allows everything else.

Football - Football League Cup - Quarter-Final - Southampton FC v Liverpool FCJoe Allen 10

A huge part of the comeback. Gorgeous ball for the first goal. Wins it high up the pitch for the second. Loads of great closing down for the fourth, too. Or was it the fifth? There were loads of goals. Lots thought Klopp might not fancy him, but how could you not like that?

Emre Can 9

Sells himself too easy for the first, but there aren’t many players in the league who can make that play for the second. After that he was colossal. Still charging through in stoppage time.

Adam Lallana 9

“He’s winning 6-1, he’s winning 6-1… Adam Lallana, he’s winning 6-1.” Booed and more all night but kept his composure brilliantly. Made up for him.

Divock Origi 10

Explodes onto the scene with a perfect hat-trick. Great to see him grow in confidence throughout the game. Second is a peach.

Daniel Sturridge 10

The importance of his first two goals can’t be forgotten in an eventual rout. Goals change games, and the first is always vital. We were looking a bit shaky until then. Lovely to see him dance again.

Jordon Ibe 8

Outstanding finish. The type you can’t imagine him even trying a couple of months ago. Only 19, you know?

Jordan Henderson 7

Great celebration on the touchline with Klopp for the fifth.

Brad Smith 7

A remarkable turnaround. Didn’t look like he was ever going to play for the club again. Next thing he’s curling in crosses for 6-1 wins. Should have signed that contract ages ago, lad.
