Good stuff again. I agree that Mkhitaryan (if he comes) will take Henderson’s place and it was watching his goals from last season that made it click for me. He seems absolutely boss at timing that run in behind on the overlap beyond the centre forward. He positions himself perfectly for the through ball then times his acceleration to stay onside very well. Then he seems a extremely composed 1v1 finisher.
This is what Henderson did well in attack in the last third of the season. I honestly think we’ve looked for a player who can do that specific thing to an elite level and who can also just improve on Henderson’s all round game in general.
To me it looks like we’re building an attacking plan around Coutinho (and Gerrard’s) ability to play penetrative passes. I haven’t seen much of Aspas but I’m going to be betting he’s Downing + more pace and better finishing. Alberto has been brought in Coutinho’s number 2.
Big fan of the show and raring to hear your comments on the Reina/ Mignolet conundrum, but the Direct link to the podcast seems to be broken :(
I am using Mozilla Firefox 21.0, jfyi.
Great podcast. What the club is showing with a move like Mignolet, I would guess, is that status quo without Champion’s League football is not acceptable. It may be painful for supporters to see star players like Reina and others go, but its going on four seasons now without real European nights.
Rodgers and the club may not succeed in the moves they’ve made, but their not sitting on any laurels or divulging unfettered loyalty to individual players. Kenny Dalglish said it before he was sacked, “There is no one bigger than the club.”
Seems to me as they are embracing that now.
Treadur Bay? Nice area! I camp there a fair bit but beach isn’t great. If you’re in Anglesey, Newborough beach is really nice if you walk over to the lighthouse. Takes half an hour through the pine forest but eliminates the riff-raff. Aberffraw, next beach up is nice too.
Fistral? Yeah, ok, nice vibe but a bit crowded and built up? If you’re ever down in Cornwall, go to Porthcurno beach (the open air Minack Theatre sits on the rocks above). Walk onto the headland path to the left of Porthcurno beach as you come down the trail to the beach. Follow the path for 10 mins. Drop down onto the beach. The last bit is a bit of a climb and not suitable for young kids but has to be one of the best in Britain. When the tide goes out it leaves a mini lake 6 ft deep. All sand and as clear and as big as a swimming baths.
Gower Peninsula is a very good shout.
Interesting stuff chaps.
I immediately thought of Porthcurno beach as well, it really is a gem. Just park up by the Telegraph Museum and head down the path. Gorgeous Med-style sand.
By the way, the direct link to the podcast has the title as ‘Four Wise Men’, but the actual file title as ‘Three Wise Men’. It took me about 10 minutes of repeated searching and swearing at the computer before I twigged. You zany guys, it was like an Easter egg hunt!
