well, it seems you all got suckered in by cameron and bernstein’s ‘apology’.
Yes they were apologies, but only apologies for what could no longer be avoided if they were to keep their jobs given the panel’s report.
Bernstein apologised for the safety certificate issue, why? Because there was no legal responsibility for the FA to consider such certification. Sorry, no legal challenge possible there for the 96.
Meanwhile Bernstein specifically does not comment on why Liverpool fc’s protests over the use of the ground AND then the choice of the smaller end for the fans were ignored.
That is their culpability, lost in the flood of emotion by carefully constructed statements. Bernstein it seems will not be taken to task over this, so the apology becomes empty and gives us nothing of value.
Cameron specifically exonerates the govt, and importantly Margaret Thatcher as the report says no evidence of a cover up at government level.
Yet for Thatcher, the Home Secretary and her cabinet to ignore the deafening howls of lies and injustice required those of extraordinary determination and extreme prejudice against football fans.
That was the complicity provided by the govt to the police – through the entire eighties infact. The police could do no wrong in their eyes and would be backed to the hilt, as indicated by Jack Straw on the Today program last week.
Cameron skilfully circumvented this issue. Job done. Completely missed by the media and the likes of yourselves. The government of the day will not be held to account. Not for the first time.
Our worst nightmare might well lie ahead now.
Govt – not culpable.
FA – no legal requirement to consider stadium certification. not culpable.
– ignored Liverpool’s protest over use of the ground – so what?
Ambulance service – under orders of the police on the day, not culpable.
Police – this is a big one. tough for them to navigate their way out of this, but consider these possible defences that might come out of a legal process.
– altered statements: what was removed was opinion and conjecture not fact (mainly from junior officers).
– the opening of Gate C to allow crowds in precipitating the tragedy: an operational decision to alleviate what was considered a life or injury threatening situation outside the ground. Opening of the wrong gate claimed to be a spur of the moment mistake.
– questioning fans or testing victims for alcohol content: nothing illegal about that, they will point to precedence of football hooliganism.
And there you have it. Mistakes, spur of the moment decisions from officers on the ground not malice aforethought or supervisory incompetence.
The apologies were carefully constructed statements and what you must never forget is truth has no place where power and money reign supreme.
I am scared of the outcome. Very scared.
jonnysingapore! Please read my comments over the past few days.
This is where it all lies! Manipulation and misdirection.Jesus Christ Derren Brown couldn’t do a better job than this!
Carefully crafted statements to grab the headlines followed by half-arsed apologies!
It wasn’t me it was them!
I’m so glad you see through it all jonnysingapore!I thought for a moment I was going nuts!
Thanks!
I’m afraid I’m going to have to chime in with the voices of scepticism.
‘MUST’ are playing politics with the chants and over at the Telegraph comments section they are still trying to point the finger at the fans.
They are both desperately trying to cling on. I’m guessing the former are trying to both avoid national opprobrium and represent a stubborn core of fans. The latter are miffed the Police and Ambulance services are getting shafted while naughty ‘hooligans’ get away with it. The way comments now fall back on Suarez and Heysel tell you a pernicious prejudice is what is desperately clinging on.
